2011 Bike Commute Challenge Winners

The 2011 Bike Commute Challenge was more competitive and suspenseful than ever! When the dust had settled, the City of Redding came out on top with the most points. A new kid on the block, Nichols, Melburg, and Rossetto, were on their wheels for a close second, and last year's winner, Shasta College, a close third. The overall dedication and enthusiasm of every team was impressive. Creative incentive programs put into place increased the participation and the camaraderie of the teams. Everyone who participated in the 2011 Bike Commute Challenge is a winner because the benefits that bicylce commuting offer for health, fitness, quality of life, and air quality are huge. All told, 250 participants rode 6,398 miles for commuting or errands, preventing the release of 5,918 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and saving $1,250 on fuel. Jeff Worthington and Debbie Hare won the grand prize of a $100 gift certificate to the bicycle shop of their choice. See the full list of drawing winners below.
Bike Commute Challenge Winners

The Shasta Cascade Bicycle Coalition, Healthy Shasta, Shasta Wheelmen and Shasta County Air Quality offered this year’s Bike Commute Challenge and Bike Week activities in conjunction with these generous sponsors: Chain Gang, Churn Creek Meadow Organic Farm, City of Redding, ESP Outdoor, Sports LTD, The Bike Shop, Nick Webb, John Waldrop and Trails and Bikeways Council.

Registration Information

This free community-wide challenge encourages more people to bike more often for errands and their daily commute. Participants have the chance to win great prizes and compete against other worksite teams. The next Bike Commute Challenge will be in May 2012. Free Breakfast for Bicyclists

In celebration of Shasta Cascade Bicycle Coalition’s 2011 Bike Commute Week, the Shasta Wheelman offered secure bicycle parking and FREE tickets to the famous Asphalt Cowboy's Pancake Breakfast for 141 riders. Shasta Wheelman also had 71 participants in the Ride of Silence which recognizes bicyclists injured or killed in a crash with a motor vehicle.

Past Bike Commute Challenges

California Bike Commute Week is typically celebrated in mid-May to encourage bicycling as a form of transportation while decreasing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and promoting safe bicycle commuting. Local activities are provided by the Shasta Cascade Bicycle Coalition (link to their info on biking page) and supported by local bicycling groups and shops. 2010 Bike Commute Challenge Winners

In 2010, 25 businesses registered for the Bike Commute Challenge. During the Challenge 152 participants rode 3,065 miles, prevented the release of 2,835 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, 40 pounds of other air pollutants, 145 gallons of fuel and saved $436.40 on fuel (at $2.99/gallon) all while commuting by bike!

Bicycle Friendly Employer of the Year

In 2010, Shasta College was named Bicycle-Friendly Employer of the year by the NorCal Bicycle Partnership. Shasta College provides bike racks, inside bike parking, showers, and lockers to their employees, supporting them to commute by bicycle, and has bicycle route maps posted on campus. They had 22 people on their team, riding 74 round trips for a total 758 miles.
