24-May-2012 Update
Thirty-four teams registered for the Bike Commute Challenge, plus individual participants, riding 13,030 miles over the seven-day period (compared to 250 riders logging 6,398 miles in 2011). Those numbers saved approximately 12,053 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and 169 pounds of other pollutants from release. Participants saved $2,538 by not using 620 gallons of fuel (assuming $4.09 per gallon and 21 mpg). Not only were fewer cars on the road as participants took to pedaling rather than driving, but bike commuters also got exercise, reduced stress levels and enjoyed being on a bicycle instead of at the wheel.You may continue to track you bicycle trips and miles here throughout the year. Please note that all data will be reset to zero at the beginning of the next Bike Commute Challenge in May 2013. Only trips that were logged by May 21st were eligible for the drawing and team standings.

- Record the bicycle trips you make to work, school, or errands during the challenge.

2012 Bike Commute Challenge Prize Winners
Participants were entered into a free drawing each day they rode a bike to work, school or errands (anywhere you may otherwise drive to) between May 13-19, 2012. The more days someone rode, the greater their chance of winning. Top prizes winners include:- Debbi from the Shasta Superiors won a $100 Gift Certificate to the bike shop of her choice from Healthy Shasta
- Don (individual category) won a $50 Bike Shop Gift Certificate and water bottle from Rabobank Redding

Top Teams in 2012
When the dust had settled, the California Department of Transportation District 2 came out on top with the most points and was also named Bicycle Friendly Employer of the Year. Team DDW: Fear the Beard
Team DDW faced the ultimate challenge this year. Fellow rider, Franklin Saylor, pledged to shave his beard if Team DDW rode at least 300 miles, an increase from last year’s total of 225 miles. This was enough to motivate 5 non-riders to dust off their old bikes and hit the pavement. RPD Catching Kids "Riding Right"
Redding Police Department and Shasta Safe Routes to School have teamed up to reward kids and youth they "catch" bicyclng safely with a helmet and following the rules of the road. Free Breakfast for Bicyclists
In celebration of the 2012 Bike Commute Week, the Shasta Wheelman will provide secure valet bicycle parking and FREE tickets to the famous Asphalt Cowboy's Pancake Breakfast for the first 150 people to arrive on a bicycle wearing a helmet.
