Trail User Survey Results

Healthy Shasta's Trail User Survey received 819 responses from people who use the Sacramento River Trail. Data includes information about where trail users live, what they use the trail for, how often they use the trail, and how they would improve walking and bicycling in Redding. Highlights:
  • 79% of respondents live in a Redding area zip code
  • 45% report walking on the River Trail, followed by 35% bicycling and 16% jogging/running on their most recent trip to the trail
  • 52% used the trail for exercise, 37% for recreation, and 7% for transportation on their most recent trip to the trail
  • Among those using the Dana/Hilltop trailhead, 18% used it for transportation on their most recent trip to the trail
  • Among those who use the trail to commute to work or school, the average commute is 21.8 miles and the median commute is 8 miles
  • Overall, 63% of respondents got to the river trail in a motor vehicle, while 20% rode a bike and 14% walked to the trailhead (less than half of those using the Dana/Hilltop trailhead drove to the trail)
  • Among those using the Dana/Hilltop trailhead, 62% report that they bike or walk more often for recreation and 30% report that they bike or walk more often for transportation since that trail extension opened
  • There are 414 written comments about making it easier to walk or bike to the trailhead and 474 written comments about making it easier, safer or more convenient to walk or bike in Redding (or to encourage more people to walk or bike more often)
