School environments that support healthy choices foster healthy students. Much research has shown the academic success of students is strongly linked to their health. Students who are more physically active and consume a nutritionally-balanced diet perform better in school. Research also shows that it is easier for individuals to be more active and eat healthfully when their environment encourages such behaviors. Schools play a critical role in providing quality nutrition, integrating physical activity into the school day, and educating students about healthy active lifestyles. It is encouraging that many schools across the nation are accepting the challenge to improve their school environment to reinforce the healthy lifestyle messages they teach in the classroom. Healthy Shasta is working with Shasta County schools to help put theory into practice and develop schools that not only foster students’ academic success but also encourage healthy behaviors.
